1/1 About Me
This is my first semester at Teachers College. I am in the MA in Art and Art Education with Initial Certification program. I intend to become a high school art teacher.
My background is in traditional fine arts. I attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York for the first two years of college. I majored in Studio Art with a concentration in painting, mostly focusing on figurative art. It became clear by the end of my second year that I wasn't getting the art education I needed what with blasé student attitudes and minimal class options. I transferred the next year to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and majored in painting for three years. I took classes in anatomy drawing, printmaking, jewelry, figurative ceramics, illustration, and oil painting. After much exploration, I began a series of fantastical landscape paintings (seen on daniellerubin.com) that turned into my thesis.
"Take A Walk With Me", 30x40 in, oil on canvas, 2017
I fell in love with art education while being an assistant art teacher at a creative and performing arts camp called Usdan. I adore watching kids' faces light up when they learn something new and fostering their creative minds. I have been teaching ages 5-14 at Usdan for the past five summers. While I love the younger kids, I found that I prefer teaching middle school and high school aged students as I can use much more diverse subject matter, materials, and language.
I have very little experience with technology other than photography. I took digital photography classes in high school and am quite familiar with DSLR cameras. I mostly shoot in black and white. I love taking candid portrait shots, street photos, and landscape scenes. In the past, my landscape photos have been used for the sole purpose of reference in my painting practice. I hope to make them more of an art unto themselves.
As far as the tech mentioned in class, I am mostly interested in learning Photoshop. It scares me a bit, but I intend to lose that fear and learn as much as I can about it this semester. Fabtronics, illustrator and the 3D printer also pique my interest- I would love to be able to pass along any knowledge gained to my future students. Out of all the technology we will dabble in, coding scares me the most.
I am excited for the semester and can't wait to learn as much as possible!
