5/3 Potential of Scanography for Classroom Teaching
I believe that scanography is a great tool for classroom teaching because it provides immediate results and has great potential for play. It's also extremely accessible-most kids can find a scanner to use whether it's at school, the library, home, or a parent's office. One can scan anything he or she likes, whether it's pencils, newspapers, fabrics, cards, patterned papers, water, flowers, or one's own body parts. I found experimenting with movement and color while the scanner glides across the scan bed extremely fun and exciting. I had never thought of a scanner as an art tool before. I think kids could access great potential in the medium, exercising exploration and spontaneity with dozens of materials and gestures. It could be used to talk about layering, color, movement, depth of field, mark making, patterns, shading, and composition. It doesn't have much of a learning curve, which is helpful for kids who are self conscious.
