8/1 Ready to Fly?: A Very Potter Stop Motion (Via the Stop Motion App)
For this video, I decided I wanted to pretend I was using magic through the use of a wand to transform an object into something new. Initially, I thought I could create a stop motion of my friend changing a stuffed animal into my mother's cat, but the cat moved too much and the logistics of the whole process became too complicated.
I changed my idea to a stop motion of myself magically changing into my Hufflepuff Harry Potter robe, and then using a spell to retrieve a broom to fly on. I pretended to think about something in the video by looking up at the ceiling and having my finger on my chin. I then made it look like I had an idea using facial expressions, reached into my back pocket to take out my wand, and pointed it at myself to change my wardrobe and to obtain both brooms.
Each change in position, captured in 1-3 frames, had to be small in order to create fluid motions. In the frames between where I was in regular clothes, and then had the costume on suddenly with the wave of my wand, I merely had my friend stop taking pictures so I could grab the costume and put it on. My friend had to help me get back into the right position by looking at previous frames on the stop motion app. She took more pictures of me noticing that I changed my outfit. We used the same strategy for when I suddenly had brooms in my hand: stopping the camera shots, me moving to grab the props, my friend helping me reposition myself to where I was before only with the brooms in my hand, and her taking more shots. After that, I made small motions to show that I was positioning the broom between my legs in order to fly.
After I finished the video, I played with the speed of the video in the app to make it look fluid and normal. If it was too slow, the video became difficult to watch. If the video was too fast, you couldn't tell what was going on. I exported the stop motion from the app I used as a gif, and then a video. I put the video into iMovie to add the Harry Potter opening theme music, and to slow down the last part of the video so that it extended to fit the length of the music. My results, along with some stills, are below.

Thanks for sharing this project with us. I am the fan of Harry Potter, so I enjoy this fun and creative piece a lot. The rhythm is fluent and has a story behind it. The music clip that you selected fits the occasion, it takes me back to Hogwarts immediately. Nice work.
ReplyDeleteI love the gif and video you created for this assignment. I grew up watching Harry Potter series(unfortunately not reading because I somehow didn't get into it) and it brought back my childhood memories. I can see that you had fun creating this project and it's exciting to see a work that's incorporated with some personal interests. The music in the video also fits the scenario very well. I don't really have a suggestion on the finished piece but I'd love to see more gifs about Harry Potter from you to continue the story you started here.
