10/1 Laser Cut: Paper Doll Idea

Madison, Ren, and I decided to make paper dolls out of wood. We took pictures of each other standing in doll-like positions and imported the pictures into photoshop. This was our initial mistake- we thought we could draw everything in photoshop, import the images into illustrator, and convert the lines into rasters and vectors. While conversion is possible through live trace, it takes too long because most of our computers don't have the processing power. Illustrator was able to read the images of us for the raster/etching part, but the vector outlines around each body needed to be completely redrawn in order to have a consistent .01 line. Techs in both the Myers Media Studio and the Thingspace helped us figure out how to redraw the outlines and line up the photo images within the outlines so that our dolls could be printed properly. We sent the raster data to the laser first, had the images etched, and then sent the vector data for cutting the outlines.

We had the laser cut three semi circles so that we could put slots on the half circles and slots on the dolls, then slide them onto each other. This became our standing mechanism. We measured the widths for the slots on the wood, drew them on, and cut them using a jewelry saw.

  1. This is a great interpretation of doll-making and an excellent application of laser cutting! Viewing this makes me wonder if you guys might be able to take it further by creating an entire series of figurines that feature different poses or even creating dolls of the entire class. A fun way to combine laser-cutting with photography would be to laser-cut dolls of the entire class and then take a "class photo" of the created dolls. This is just one synthesis idea, but I foresee many other ways that your work here could be combined with other forms we've studied.

  2. This is excellent!!! I love the idea of making their own photos into greyscale images that builds up a connection between themselves and the art craft. And they make their doll stand alone makes their dolls more "human". And they are so good at making balance. I am kind of jealous.

  3. I was so delighted to see that your group made dolls. I admire the stand construction for each of these figures. I'd love to see laser cut clothes that you could attach to the dolls. I think I am just looking to play with dolls...
